Who Knows Where Everything Is? Creating an Estate Planning Roadmap for Your Family

Imagine someone you love suddenly needs to step in and manage your affairs.

Would they know where to start?

They might know you have a will. They might even know the name of your attorney.

But would they know where your original documents are? Which bank holds your accounts? Where your insurance policies are kept? Who manages your investments? How to find information about the house, business, or digital accounts? Do they know if you have a power of attorney?

Creating a strong estate plan is important.

Making sure the right people can actually find what they need is part of the planning too.

Start With Your Legal Documents

Your loved ones should know where to locate your important estate planning documents.

These may include your:

  • Will
  • Trust
  • Financial Power of Attorney
  • Health Care Power of Attorney
  • Health Care Directive (or Advance Directive)
  • Community Property Agreement (for spouses)
  • Other important planning instructions

That doesn’t mean every family member needs copies.

But the people who may eventually act for you should know where the originals are kept and how to access them when needed.

Create a Financial Roadmap

You don’t necessarily need to provide family members with every account balance.

Instead, create a roadmap.

Consider maintaining a current list of:

  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Retirement accounts
  • Investment accounts
  • Life insurance policies
  • Real estate
  • Business interests
  • Loans and significant debts
  • Financial advisors, accountants, and attorneys

Think of it as a trail of breadcrumbs that helps your decision-makers understand what exists and where to look.

Don’t Forget Digital Assets

Increasingly, important parts of our lives exist online.

Email accounts, cloud storage, online banking, subscription services, social media, cryptocurrency, photographs, and other digital assets can become difficult to manage when no one knows they exist.

Your plan should consider how appropriate individuals can identify and manage digital assets while still protecting sensitive information.

Be thoughtful about how passwords and access information are stored. Security still matters.

What About Personal Wishes?

Some of the information your family needs isn’t financial at all.

You may have preferences regarding:

  • Funeral or memorial arrangements
  • Personal belongings
  • Family heirlooms
  • Pets
  • Charitable gifts
  • People who should be contacted

Writing down these wishes can prevent loved ones from having to guess.

Review Your Roadmap Regularly

A beautiful roadmap from eight years ago isn’t especially helpful if you’ve changed banks three times since then.

Set aside time periodically to update your information.

You might make it part of an annual financial review or revisit it after major life changes.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is to leave enough clear information that someone can confidently take the next step.

Make Life Easier for Someone You Love

Estate planning is often described as protecting assets.

But sometimes its greatest value is much simpler.

It’s making a difficult day a little easier for someone you love.

Instead of searching through drawers, calling banks, and wondering what they’re missing, your family has a place to begin.

At Pettis Webber Pacific, we help Washington and Oregon families create estate plans that work in real life—not just on paper.

Ask yourself one simple question:

If someone had to step in tomorrow, would they know where everything is?

If the answer is no, creating your estate planning roadmap is a great place to start.
