Katie McGinley Petersen is an attorney licensed to practice law in Washington. She received her BA in History from Gonzaga University in 2004, and continued there to obtain her law degree in 2008. She has a special place in her heart for Spokane, WA, and Gonzaga Basketball.
Katie began her legal career at Open Door Legal Services in Seattle, WA, helping people affected by homelessness to remove legal barriers keeping them from moving forward with their lives. While there she helped individuals navigate the legal system through weekly legal clinics and individual representation in the area of family law.
After moving to Vancouver, WA, she opened her own law firm to practice family law. In her time as a family law attorney she witnessed first hand the emotional devastation that divorce and the legal system can cause to the family going through it. She wanted to help her clients in a better way, and became a certified mediator, Collaborative Divorce lawyer, and certified life coach. She empowered her clients to dive deep into what they wanted to create for their life and that they had much more power and control to do this than they may have realized.
Covid-19 brought huge changes for many people. Katie paused her practice to stay at home with her preschool aged son, which was an unexpected but welcome change and an opportunity to reevaluate what would come next in her career. She is excited to join the team at PWP and continue to help families navigate complex areas of law while empowering them to create a plan that works for their unique situation.
Being an attorney is just one thing about Katie. She lives with her husband and son in a 100-year-old historic home, which they are currently renovating. She loves learning about traditional foods and cooking methods, enjoying the outdoors, and recently discovered gardening. She especially loves spending time with her family, their dog, Finn, and cat, Pippa.
